Interactive P.O. Boxes at Brenham Heritage Museum

The Brenham Heritage Museum is housed in the former Federal Post Office.

In an effort to retain its former glory as a post office and community gathering space, CORE purchased and repurposed a set of interactive post office boxes and reinstalled them into their original space in the entry lobby.
Each of the 128 doors and drawers contains unique exhibits and will provide visitors with a glimpse into the history of Washington County, the city of Brenham, and many of the county and city’s residentsOpening one of the many brass doors will reveal historic images, miniature dioramas of local architecture and landmarks, small artifacts from the museum’s collection, whimsical artful assemblages and portholes to another universe. Several of the doors within the exhibit activate a voiceover recording of the historical oral narratives from residents, all of which deeply convey the community’s vibrant history.
Visitors young and old discover new experiences and wonders behind each of its fanciful brass doors with the ultimate goal that understanding and interpreting history can be a fun and rewarding journey.
